Has Your Motorhome Insurance Company changed the small print so you are not covered for theft? Carlock Tracker

CARLOCK Car Tracker

Has Your Motorhome Insurance Company changed the small print so you are not covered for theft?

CARLOCK Car Tracker

Carlock Tracker
After watching the video below I rang my insurance company to find out if a tracker was required to ensure my motorhome was fully covered for theft. The reply was “yes, did you not read the policy terms and conditions?”
This is a clear misrepresentation of the policy at the time of purchase and I will be taking this further.
It just so happens that I fitted a Carlock Tracker to my motorhome about a month ago, but that does not release my insurance company from the responsibility to inform policyholders that are either renewing or taking out an insurance policy, that a tracker is required to ensure cover for theft.
So the advice is if your motorhome, camper, or caravan is not fitted with a tracker get one! Then call your insurance company and check their honesty before informing them that you have one fitted.

Carlock Tracker
This tracker is extremely easy to fit and you can put it anywhere within reach of a 12v supply. Setting up requires an App (on IOS and Android) and the registration number that came with the tracker. There is a monthly charge of around £6..
TOP TIP
I have fitted and hidden a Carlock Tracker in my motorhome but I also fitted an OBD tracker on the OBD port under the dash. This is easily unplugged and removed. Leaving the said thief thinking that the tracker has been removed.

21 Motorhome Essentials Every Van Needs

10m Mains Hook up Lead/Extension

21 MOTORHOME ESSENTIALS EVERY VAN NEEDS

21 Motorhome Essentials

  • Hosepipe

To fill your water tanks, you will need a hosepipe. It is strongly recommended to get one 10 – 15m in length. It is best to use a food-grade hose. Although a flat hose is much simpler to store, I prefer the normal hose. Too many times I’ve been caught out when I’ve found out my hose is a few feet too short and had to shift the van closer to the tap while other motorhomers sit and watch.

Food Grade Hose

Food Grade Hose

Hose connections are a great idea, I use Hozelock which is a pretty universal fitting but I still carry the brass adaptors for different size taps just in case. Don’t leave the connectors at home! A water tankfiller cap makes filling your van’s water tank easier.

Hozelock 2352 Hose Fitting

Hozelock Hose Adaptors

Universal Water Tank Cap

220v electric hookup cable is a necessity on campsites, spread the cable out on the ground beside your van. Top tip – When coiling up your cable start in the middle and work your way to the end, when that’s done start again from the middle of the cable and work your way to the other end. ( you’ll need to practice this a few times) The advantage of coiling it this way is if it gets into a tangle you only have to untangle half of it. (You’ll also look like a pro!!)

25m Mains Hook up lead

2-Way Splitter Mains Hookup

A 220v to mains adaptor  is handy as some sites do not have enough power outlets for the number of pitches.

Lead Converter 13A/16A Plug/Socket

Calor Gas Bottle Spanner
gaslow - refillable bottle gas system

You can choose from bottles that can be exchanged or refilled. Stick with exchangeable if you want to spend the majority of your time in the UK. Get a spanner for tightening/loosening the bottles. The normal size is 30mm. I use the refillable gas system by Gaslow.

Fiamma Level Up Kit

After only one night at an awful angle, you’ll understand why levelling ramps are a need for motorhomes.
I definitely suggest them. When it’s muddy or damp, the storage bag is very helpful.

Milenco Mud Traction Mats

Have you ever been stranded on a muddy pitch or field while on a camping trip? I have… It was not enjoyable.
Without these mud mats, I don’t think we would have managed to escape. They are crucial motorhome equipment that cannot be without.

Fire Extinguisher & Blanket

It goes without saying that a fire extinguisher and fire blanket are essential. Never travel without them!

Anywhere you use gas or oil for cooking or heating you MUST have a Carbon Monoxide alarm!

Kidde Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Safety Kits

Other essential things for your motorhome are first aid kits, spare bulbs and fuses, a roadside warning triangle and a basic tool kit

First Aid Kit Motorhome Accessories
Motorhome Emergency Kit

There’s nothing more annoying twhen something electrical suddenly stops working. Only to find it’s a blown fuse and there’s not a spare fuse anywhere in the van.

100pcs Blade Fuses

Have you got a spare wheel? Most will not know that the majority of motorhomes do not have a spare wheel! It’s a lengthy process calling out a recovery company only to find you have no spare. Ewo items that will save you a lot of time, if you do the repair yourself or call the AA RAC or Green Flag etc. Trust me I know!

Tyre Repair Kit Universal

RAC900 Tyre Inflator

Driving up a restricted road or street could lead you into some embarrassing situations. Evan an invitation for a chat with the boys in blue! The Garmin Motorhome Satnav can save you from that. By giving it your motorhome dimensions and weight it will keep you off the roads that are not designed for the size of your vehicle.

Garmin Motorhome Satnav
Avtex Tourer Two - Caravan and Motorhome Satellite Navigation System

If you spend a lot of time in your motorhome, cleaning will be necessary. I have had a variety of 12v vacuum cleaner models and have come to the conclusion that Dyson may not be worth the money. Choosing one that has a 12-volt charging option is the only real option.

Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

These are just a few things that I regard as essential and will make living in your motorhome or campervan just that little bit more comfortable. If you think I should add anything else just message me with what it is and how it made living in your van a whole lot better.

Connecting Your Motorhome to the Internet

Connecting Your Motorhome to the Internet

Connecting Your Motorhome to the Internet

Connecting Your Motorhome to the Internet

Examples of How to get WIFI in your Motorhome or Camper
How to get internet and Wi-Fi and mobile on the road
Are you looking for a way to receive wireless internet in your motorhome or camper?
Do you need a 4G antenna, a Wi-Fi dongle, or a router?

Everything you need to know about getting the internet into your motorhome.

Connecting Your Motorhome to the Internet

There are a few alternatives for internet connectivity in a motorhome.  If finding a cafe or restaurant with wifi is not an option then here are a few options that are available, one of which you probably already have.
A mobile phone or iPad/tablet with a SIM card for connection to a phone network.
Wifi dongle (all the UK phone network providers sell these).
A dedicated internet system/satellite is installed in your motorhome.

But don’t worry if this sounds a bit too difficult it’s actually quite easy.
Using a phone, iPad/tablet for mobile wifi or internet
Your mobile phone should already be set up to utilise data if you’re in your own country. You should be able to connect to the internet on your phone providing you have a mobile signal. When using your mobile phone you can set your phone up to act like the router you have at home and allow other devices that do not have sim card access to a phone network to connect to it. This is done by way of using your phone as a ‘wifi hotspot’.

O2 Sim only dealsSim Deals From O2

Setting up your phone as a ‘Wifi Hotspot’

The Hotspot setting will be in the phone’s settings menu and
When it is first activated you will need to set up a name for it and a password, this will prevent other devices nearby from connecting to your data stream and consuming all your data allowance. On your device search for your phone hotspot as you would when connecting to any wifi network, enter your password, and bingo! you’re connected.

Using Mobile data abroad

If you are heading outside of your home country, ensure sure your phone supports data roaming and that you have a plan that allows you to access data in other countries at a lower cost.
Things have changed since Brexit so you need to check that your network provider will not send you a massive bill for roaming charges, also be aware that the UK networks may say you have free or cheap roaming charges but there will most certainly be a data cap on how much you can use and you may still rack up a big bill at the end of your holiday if you exceed that data cap.
Keep in mind that Apps like Netflix, Facebook, TV, and radio will use up much more data and you will reach that cap limit quicker than you expected.

How to use a wifi dongle to access mobile internet in a camper or motorhome

The disadvantage of using your phone for the internet is that if you’re not careful, it may quickly deplete your mobile data, leaving you without any for the rest of your vacation.
A wifi dongle is a very convenient way to connect to the internet. All the major UK phone networks (O2, Vodafone, EE, and Three) sell dongles with options of Pay as you go or a  contract, Occasionally you will find really good deals with unlimited data, so shop around!
As with the phone, the dongle will connect as long as there’s a phone signal.

Purchasing a mobile wifi dongle’s SIM card

To utilise a mobile wifi dongle, you’ll need to get a SIM card. Prepaid ones are excellent, but check the fine print: once they’re activated, you usually only have a certain amount of time to utilise the data before it expires. Some Pay as You Go offers will give unused data rollover to the maximum of the plan monthly allowance, again shop around.

How many devices can you connect to a motorhome wifi dongle?

The number of devices that can connect to one dongle varies. But remember in areas of weaker signals the more devices using the dongle the quality of the internet will reduce and lead to movie pixelation and buffering, so films that you are used to watching in 4k could drop to 1080p or even 720p.

Recommended Motorhome Wifi

The Netgear M1 MR1100 4G Router is popular with seasoned motorhomers, the router is unlocked meaning any network sim card will work in it, the MR1100 has download speeds of up to 1 Gbps and will connect up to 20 Devices. Just what you need to keep the kids happy and family evening viewing.

Kuma Motorhome Wifi Internet Booster

Kuma Motorhome Wifi Internet Booster

A motorhome wifi booster is an antenna or tiny box that attaches to the roof or exterior of your Motorhome or camper and amplifies whatever wifi signal it receives. This allows you to connect faster but it needs a wifi signal to amplify and not a phone network signal.
It can be secured permanently or with suction cups as this method does not require making holes in your camper roof/wall and most can be powered by either 12v or 240v perfect for boosting the wifi signal while you are on campsites.

Motorhome Cupboard Hinge Repair Plate

Motorhome Cupboard Hinge Repair Plate

A Disaster – Motorhome Repair

It was a bright, sunny, and surprisingly warm morning at the Invercoe Caravan & Camping Park, Glen Coe, overlooking Loch Leven, as I prepared breakfast, the motorhome usual, a feast of a bacon butty and a cup of coffee. The Table and chairs were set outside in the morning sun. I was looking forward to a leisurely drive to The Croft Caravan & Camping Site near Arisaig with a stop mid-morning for more coffee along the way ( you can never have too much coffee )

Bacon Butty

With Bacon butty and a coffee in hand, I turned towards the habitation door and basically tripped over the open cupboard door below the sink! I staggered and stumbled trying to avoid the door but it was to no avail, I couldn’t have done a better job if I had kicked the bottom of the door! Essentially this stumble and stagger that had looked like a scene from ‘Some Mothers Do Have Them’ had broken the cupboard door lower hinge and pulled it out of the wood leaving a splintered mess and the now disfigured door laying at an angle looking very sorry for itself.

I was so disheartened by the embarrassing event and I felt empty that my lovely motorhome was now no longer perfect in every way. As a temporary fix, I used gaffer tape to hold the door in place but this meant that the cupboard could no longer be used and the black tape all over it constantly reminded me of my damaged motorhome.

Genius Idea

While I searched on the internet for ways to fix this, I discovered a genius idea of using ready-made metal plates that can be screwed in place around the damaged area, holding the hinge in exactly the correct place, and still be fully adjustable!! Why don’t manufacturers use this method to reinforce the hinge mounting locations to prevent this from happening!! Needless to say, I order the plates and they were waiting for me when I returned home.

Hinge Repair Mounting Plate

With the door now fixed and looking like new again, I am a happy bunny! Carrying these items in my tool kit means that, god forbid anything like this happens again it can be fixed in a very short time, and there lays the tip!! Be like me and carry these hinge plates in case you use your size 9’s to redesign the interior of your motorhome or caravan.
